Prevention Strategies
Learn how to select proactive, function-based strategies that reduce the likelihood of target behaviors by modifying environmental conditions and adult supports.
- Click on Search Prevention Strategy Inventory to view and select from the strategies. The inventory is categorized by function of behavior to support matching strategies to the context and function of behavior.
- Optional: use the Filter Categories menu to deselect any categories of strategies that are not relevant to the BIP.
- Reference the completed Simple FBA form or team input to determine the likely function(s) of the target behavior to match prevention strategies.
- Clicking the Search Prevention Strategy Inventory will also allow you to type key words to assist with searching strategies.
- Select a strategy and click Save.
- Once saved, the strategy will display under Implementation Details with a description, rationale, and implementation examples. Click on the details to remove or customize the description and individualize the implementation details for this student and classroom.
- Repeat these steps for additional prevention strategies. TIP: Start small - these strategies require consistent implementation. Although there is no limit to the number of strategies that can be added, selecting 1-2 strategies will support a practical approach to initial implementation.
- Additional Prevention Details (Optional): add any additional notes or implementation details to display in the Prevention Strategies section of the BIP.
- Person Responsible (Optional): Designate a lead person or persons to support implementation of BIP components. Specify Responsible Party or Role, as well as, When and Where the component should be prepared, trained, practiced, and/or implemented. (Example: School Counselor, Morning Check-in, Counseling office)
- Custom Prevention Strategy (Optional): Type the title of a custom strategy, select a category, and enter implementation details (details can be modified later). Click Create to add the strategy to the BIP.
FBA Highlight: For BIPs developed from an FBA, a summary of the completed Antecedent Assessment will display in the lower-left corner of the screen. Use this summary as a quick reference when selecting Prevention Strategies that address the situations, triggers, and environmental factors associated with the target behavior.
BIP Prevention Strategies: Advanced Planning Guide
Prevention strategies help reduce problem behavior by:
- Reducing the student’s need to use the target behavior.
- Setting the stage for positive replacement behaviors.
Use the antecedents identified in the FBA to select or design prevention strategies that directly address the predictors of the target behavior.
Example: If the FBA indicates that transitions to non-preferred activities and difficult tasks often occur before the target behavior, the team may consider a motivational system for appropriate transitions and strategies to increase successful academic interactions.
Positive Behavior and Instructional Supports
Select or design strategies that reduce triggers for problem behavior and add supports that increase the likelihood of positive behavior.
Example: If changes in routine appear to trigger yelling or tantrums, the team may use a visual support system to help the student prepare for and manage transitions more independently.
If a student struggles during a specific subject and often seeks peer attention, the team may use a peer support system during that subject to provide both academic support and structured positive peer interaction.
