Behavior Chain
Learn how to document a student's escalation cycle by identifying triggers, precursor behaviors, and the Target Behavior to support early intervention and response planning.
Use the Behavior Chain section to document the student's typical escalation cycle leading to the Target Behavior. Reference the completed Simple FBA Form, FBA, observations, or collaborative team discussion to identify common triggers, early warning signs, and progressively more severe behaviors.
Document the escalation sequence from the earliest signs of concern through the Target Behavior. Identifying these stages helps teams recognize opportunities for early intervention and supports the development of response strategies that match the student's level of escalation.
TriggersDescribe the situations, antecedents, transitions, or contexts that most commonly lead to the Target Behavior.
Example: Entering the classroom after recess, transitions from high- to low-preferred tasks, or being verbally corrected following misbehavior.
Initial EscalationDescribe the earliest observable behaviors that indicate the student is beginning to escalate.
These behaviors are often subtle and provide the greatest opportunity for early intervention.
Example: Groaning, frowning, laying their head on the desk, refusing to begin work, or complaining.
Increased EscalationDescribe behaviors that indicate a higher level of escalation or increased disruptiveness.
These behaviors often signal that additional supports or more structured responses may be needed.
Example: Slamming hands on the desk, crumpling assignments, arguing with the teacher, or refusing directions.
Target BehaviorDescribe the highest level of escalation or the primary Target Behavior addressed by the plan.
Example: Prolonged or disruptive outbursts including yelling at the teacher, knocking over or throwing materials, property destruction, aggression, and/or attempting to leave the classroom.
Tip: When multiple Target Behaviors have been grouped, use the Behavior Chain to describe how those behaviors occur within a common escalation cycle.
Note: Any escalation levels left blank will not appear in the completed BIP report. The completed Behavior Chain will also be displayed within the Response Strategies section of the BIP, where response strategies can be developed for each level of escalation.
