Antecedents
Learn how to identify events and environmental conditions that reliably occur before target behaviors to better understand behavior patterns and guide prevention strategies.
Antecedents are the events, conditions, interactions, or environmental factors that occur immediately before a Target Behavior. Identifying consistent antecedent patterns helps teams understand when and where behaviors are most likely to occur and informs the selection of effective Prevention Strategies within the BIP.
Select one or more antecedents from the inventory within each applicable category. Use Antecedent Details to summarize important patterns or provide additional context not captured by the selected inventory items.
Antecedent categories include:
- Physical Environment – Where the behavior most commonly occurs (e.g., classroom, playground, cafeteria, bus).
- Time of Day – When the behavior is most likely to occur (e.g., morning arrival, after lunch, end of day).
- Activities – Specific activities associated with the behavior (e.g., independent work, small group instruction, recess).
- Instructional / Tasks – Types of instruction or academic demands that may trigger the behavior (e.g., writing assignments, difficult tasks, teacher directions, non-preferred work).
- Social – Interactions with peers or adults that commonly precede the behavior (e.g., peer conflict, teasing, staff redirection, lack of adult attention).
- Sensory Stimulation – Environmental sensory conditions associated with the behavior (e.g., loud noise, crowded spaces, bright lights).
- Transitions – Changes in activities, settings, staff, or routines that increase the likelihood of the behavior.
- Setting Event – Less immediate events that increase the likelihood an antecedent will trigger the Target Behavior (e.g., lack of sleep, illness, missed medication, conflict earlier in the day, hunger).
Tip: Focus on identifying patterns rather than isolated incidents. Antecedents should be based on information gathered through observations, interviews, record reviews, and other assessment procedures.
Antecedent Details
Use Antecedent Details to summarize important patterns or relationships among antecedents that may not be fully captured by the selected inventory items.
Example: During independent writing activities in Language Arts, work refusal is most likely to occur when lengthy written assignments are presented without teacher support.
Setting Events
Setting Events are conditions that occur before the immediate situation and increase the likelihood that a specific antecedent will trigger the Target Behavior. They do not directly cause the behavior but make it more likely that the student will respond to common triggers.
Example: Michael does not always engage in noncompliance following teacher directions. However, teacher directions are much more likely to result in noncompliance when he arrives at school tired after little sleep or reports that he skipped breakfast.
Custom Antecedents
If an antecedent is not available within the inventory, click Add Custom Trigger to create your own antecedent. Select the appropriate category, enter the custom trigger, and click Create. Custom antecedents can be selected and edited just like inventory items.
